Point and shoot, compact underwater cameras are not big and bulky anymore, nor do they want a waterproof housing to be at home in the water. The best underwater cameras look no different than other point and shoot compact cameras, and also don't cost an arm and a leg more. That is why it makes no sense to buy anyone but a waterproof camera. At some point most cameras will be in the situation where they may come into sense with water, but if you have an underwater camera, then you won't think twice about it. People are catching on to the peace of mind that waterproof cameras can offer, and business are catering to them by competitive to make the best underwater camera. Here we will discuss the things to keep in mind when deciding which one to buy for your situation.

Depth

Underwater cameras are rated by how deep they can be taken under the surface. The deeper down the more pressure they will be exposed to, causing water to force its way into the mechanics of the camera, which is not obviously good. When I purchased my first underwater camera many years ago, it was rated to 5 feet; I was thrilled. Now, I would not buy one that was not rated 15 feet or deeper. The better ones are rated for 30 feet. The thing is, that unless you will be scuba diving or ultimate free diving, most People will not need to buy a camera that will go 30 feet plus. That said, it may be wise to go with a camera that is warranted to go a minuscule deeper than you will need for a minuscule extra insurance.

Size and Shape

The size of point and shoot cameras has absolutely been reduced significantly in new years. In fact, when I buy a camera, I am more implicated that it is not too small. For me, it is prominent that a camera be able to stand on its own so that I can take timed shots where I will sit it on a rock or other structure so that I can be in the photograph as well. For fisherman, an underwater camera must be able to sit on top of uneven rocks. Not everybody carries or has time to set up a tripod, so you have to use what you have nearby at the time.

Adventure Rated

If you are at all curious in buying an underwater camera, then you are most likely the adventurous type. If that is the case then you will want to make sure you buy a camera that can handle anyone you will throw at it. You will want to make sure your buy can take a few bumps and bruises. Make sure it is rated to take falls and will stand up under pressure. There are few models out there now that are made to be abused.

Price

The issue of price is not as realistic these days as it once was with the incompatibility between underwater and hydrophobic (regular) cameras. In fact, they cost about the same and come in different price ranges. Point and shoot underwater cameras range from under 0 to over 0, just like acceptable digital cameras, manufacture price not a factor when selecting between one or the other. It is an prominent factor though when selecting which underwater camera, as price can fluctuate quite a bit.
